MODULE: Competitive Strategy & Innovation (Richard Branson and the Virgin Group Case Study)

I have complete copy of this assignment. If you want to have complete draft of this work then contact me at my email id: projectwork185@gmail.com

Assessment Task

You are required to read the case on Richard Branson and the Virgin Group Case (Attached separately)  and prepare a 15 minute board level PowerPoint presentation (18-20 slides) that addresses the following questions (support your answer in details in the Notes page of each slide):

  1. Using appropriate academic models and concepts identify and discuss the chief internal and external factors that have influenced the Virgin Group and the strategies employed up to the time of the case.                                     (30%)

  1. Critically assess whether, in your opinion, there was any evidence that Richard Branson and his group management team followed a consistent strategy or not in the major investments. If so, what sort of approach might it have been based upon, and what was the role of the Virgin head office function?    (40%)

  1. Drawing on resources such as FT.com, update your audience on any new Virgin Group activities since the case, commenting on whether or not subsequent major investments fit in with your findings from Q2 above, or if there was any other strategic rationale.   Conclude with recommendations on the future of the group.                                                                                              (30%)

The percentages above indicate the weighting given to each section.

Assessment Guidance

You will be expected to read the case several times to make sure you understand the context, grasp the detail and then review the key elements using the key strategy models to go through the strategy process, drawing on evidence from the case to justify your views.

You should carry out further research on The Virgin Group, however you must only use material drawn from credible sources such as: academic articles and texts;; quality newspaper and business periodicals, e.g., the FT, The Economist and the official Virgin website. You should not use unreliable sources such as non-reviewed websites, e.g., Wikipedia.

Ensure to read and include the following good books about Strategy:

·         Johnson, G. Whittington, R. & Scholes, K. (2011)  "Exploring Strategy", 9th ed, FT Prentice Hall (this book is preferred by the module instructor)
·         Grant, R. (2010), "Contemporary Strategy Analysis", 7th ed, Wiley
·         Lampel J., Minztberg H., Quinn, J.B., Ghoshal, S (2014), "The Strategy Process: Concepts, Contexts, Cases", 5th ed, Pearson

Please prepare your submission as a PowerPoint document, using the notes option putting any narrative or explanatory notes underneath the slide itself. Be conscious about the maximum time allowed, and therefore the number of slides you need to create (20 slides max). Brevity, clarity and key strategic thinking is key, showing that you have understood the essence of the case and can communicate effectively with supporting evidence.

Presentation Format: (18-20 Slides)

Choose one or two of the areas covered in the Managing in Organizations module and critically analyse them with reference to an organization in which you have worked

1.  Assessment task and assessment criteria for coursework

I have complete copy of this assignment. If you want to have complete draft of this work then contact me at my email id:  projectwork185@gmail.com

There will be one 3,000 word (plus or minus 10%) assignment, attracting 100% of the marks for the module.   The assignment brief  is as follows:

“Choose one or two of the areas covered in the Managing in Organizations module and critically analyse them with reference to an organization in which you have worked.”

Note:
Please type the assignment using double-line spacing and fasten assignment by stapling at top left hand corner.

Assignment Guidance

1)            The objective is to explore some areas of the module that interest you in the context of a real organization.    We will cover topics from the list below:

Personal Learning and Development
Organisational development and change
Organisational structure and design
Communication
The nature of management
Leadership
Decision-Making
Power
Culture
Groups and teams
Motivation
Cross cultural dimensions of management

2)            Since most organizational issues are complex it is likely that more than one factor may be important in any situation.   For example, one of the challenges of leadership is about understanding and attempting to manage the organizational culture, and the way this is undertaken may well affect motivation in the organization.   However, attempting to cover too many different areas in one assignment will inevitably lead to a superficial piece of work.   It is certainly desirable to reflect on how different factors interact but the focus should be on a limited number of topics to enable greater depth of analysis.

3)            The purpose of the assignment is to utilize theory to analyse practice and to help you reflect on your own working experience.   An assignment that makes little or no reference to a real organizational situation and appropriate theoretical and conceptual issues will not fulfil the above brief and is likely to receive a fail mark.

4)            The assignment asks for a critical analysis.   This is not simply a description either of the situation in your organization or of relevant theory.   It means using the theory to explain what went on in your organization – not just what happened, but why things happened in a particular way and why they led to particular outcomes.    A critical analysis means evaluating the utility of theory – how good is it at explaining practice, how far is it of assistance in understanding organizational issues and problems and suggesting recommendations for future practice?

5)            In summary, an assignment needs to do the following:
*              demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of relevant literature, making good use of journal articles in addition to text books;
*              apply this appropriately in order to analyse one or two organizational topics covered on the course;
*              facilitate insights and understanding of both theory and your own work    experience;
                *              enable conclusions to be drawn about both.

6)            Marks will be awarded according to how far an assignment meets the criteria outlined in (5) above.   The following gives some general indication about how the assignment will be assessed.  Please note that this is indicative only and there is no prescribed schema for the allocation of marks.

                70 and above     Distinction
                                The assignment shows evidence of wide, relevant reading that goes well beyond classroom material.  The work demonstrates a sophisticated and critical understanding of the literature.  Theory is applied to practice to enable an in-depth and insightful analysis of real world issues or problems you have experienced at work.  Detailed, relevant and considered recommendations for practice are offered.   Substantiated conclusions are drawn about the implications of the analysis for theory and practice.   Excellent structure, style and presentation with appropriate referencing both in the text and within the list of references using the required conventions.

                60-69     Good pass
                                The assignment shows evidence of relevant reading that goes beyond classroom material.  The work demonstrates a very good and critical understanding of the literature.  Theory is applied to practice to enable an in-depth analysis of real world issues or problems you have experienced at work.  Relevant and considered recommendations for practice are offered.  Substantiated conclusions are drawn about the implications of the analysis for theory and practice.   Good structure, style and presentation with appropriate referencing both in the text and within the list of references using the required conventions.

                50-59     Pass
                                The assignment shows evidence of relevant reading but this may be limited.   The work demonstrates some understanding of the literature but more critique may be required. Theory is applied to practice to enable some analysis of real world issues or problems you have experienced at work.  Some recommendations for practice are offered and the conclusions consider the implications of the analysis for theory and practice.   Adequate structure, style and presentation.  Referencing is generally appropriate both in the text and within the list of references but there may be some errors.

                                Below 50   Fail
                                There is a number of reasons why assignments fail.  The most common ones are assignments which do not apply theory to a real organization but simply describe some theories or models.   Similarly describing a general organizational situation without using relevant theory will result in failure.   Poor understanding and/or poor English may lead to unclear or unconvincing arguments.  Assertions made without supporting evidence do not constitute an argument and are poor academic practice.   Some assignments are very poorly referenced with references that are missing, incomplete, or incorrectly cited.   Cutting and pasting large amounts from other people’s work, even if correctly referenced, is to be avoided as it usually means there is little evidence of your own thinking, understanding, and critical evaluation and so little possibility of gaining marks for your own work.  Poor writing style, structure and large numbers of spelling/grammatical errors all contribute to low marks, or failure.
