You will need to prepare for the seminar in advance by completing the tasks outlined below. 

Aim

This exercise will explore issues and guiding principles relevant to policy and management in your chosen area of study. 

The exercise is also designed to provide students with early feedback on their work without the pressure of formal summative assessment. The exercise will act as the formative assessment for the Risk Perception & Management Assignment 1 (Literature Review).  Learning Outcomes

It is expected that the student will be able to:

1.       Better understand some of the key issues in risk assessment, perception and management

2.       Review and appraise the relevant literature

3.       Collate, analyse and synthesise information from a variety of credible source materials

4.       Communicate concisely but effectively

Tasks

1.       Use the University SOLAR resources and other suitable materials to search for and collate relevant evidence to support your argument. 

2.       Consider what quality criteria might be applied to determine the credibility of the evidence that you have collected. Think about why you selected your particular reference sources. 

3.       Prepare a concise answer to ONE of the following questions set out below. Your answer should approximately 1,000 words in length. Each programme group has been allocated a question. 

4.       Upload your file to the relevant Turnitin submission point, which will be set up in Blackboard   

5.       Print your answer and bring it to the session for discussion 

Questions

1.       What is the potential value of a risk-based approach to the regulation of the environmental aspects of business? (EAM/SHE)

2.       To what extent has the concept of risk influenced the approach to controlling the occupational exposure to asbestos fibres? (OSHW)

3.       What is the value of a risk-based approach to the management of occupational safety, health and wellbeing? (SHE/OSHW)

4.       To what extent does risk influence public health policy related to environmental hazards such as contaminants in air, water or food? (EPH)
